At the time of this photo, I would have thought of the area more as summer getaways vs year round living, especially for those with children. I’m fascinated to learn that is not necessarily the case. What did your wife’s great-grandfather do for a living?
William was a public school janitor; his 1942 draft registration gives his employer as Mahtomedi Public Schools. The census records put them in either Mahtomedi or Lincoln Township, but I don't see an address in any of them. He was in his 60s when his wife, Hildur, died, about 1945, and he moved to Seattle.
