There are so many people like Margaret hiding in the family tree. Single, hard-working, clearly part of a thriving community. But no children or grandchildren to tell their stories.
I often wonder while I'm digging through their vital records or city directories, "What did they *do*? What were they like?"
Some of them feel like side characters from shows about quirky small towns (a la Gilmore Girls or Northern Exposure).
